Attention - Important Information Regarding Foot-and-Mouth Disease The current outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease began when the first suspected case was confirmed
in Miyazaki Prefecture on April 20th, 2010. Foot-and-mouth disease cannot be transmitted to humans, but it can be carried on shoes, clothing,
and the human body.
Although eating meat or drinking milk from an infected animal is not dangerous, meat and milk from
infected animals will not be put on the market.
The city is working with local farmers, agricultural cooperatives, and mutual aid associations to try to
keep the disease from spreading further than it already has.
Mats soaked in disinfectant have been laid across roads around the city in order to prevent the
spread of the disease. Disinfectant mats have also been laid at the entrances to various public
institutions such as city hall, schools, libraries, etc.... Please wipe your feet thoroughly before
entering and when leaving these public spaces. Many public events have been postponed or
cancelled due to the outbreak as we try to keep the disease from spreading any further.
We ask for your continued cooperation and understanding during these trying times. Together, we
can help minimize the damage of this current outbreak.
For more information, see the Notice Concerning Foot-and-Mouth Disease released by the Miyazaki
Prefectural Government. (PDF)
