About the Polio Vaccination
***UPDATE*** This year's special administration of the polio vaccination period has ended. However, the information below may still prove useful. If you have questions about the polio vaccination or other health- related questions, please contact your nearest Public Health Center (Japanese only). Miyakonojo Public Health Center - TEL: (0986) 23-4504 (Japanese only)
Days the polio vaccine is being administered (Fall, 2011) What is polio? The symptoms of polio resemble those of a cold, but if the polio virus enters the spinal cord, a person’s extremities can become paralyzed. Thanks to inoculations, there are currently very few cases of polio. However, there are places around the world where it continues to exist. The period for vaccination ? Between 3 and 90 months after birth, the vaccine is taken twice with an interval of at least 41 days. If the vaccine is not taken twice, the immunization is not complete. After the polio vaccine has been administered, an interval of at least 27 days is required before another inoculation can be administered. The tuberculosis vaccine (BCG) is intended for children under 6-months old. If your child has not yet received this vaccine, please have your child vaccinated as soon as possible.
The combined vaccination for diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus is administered three times between 20 and 56 days after birth, and the Japanese encephalitis vaccine is administered two times between 6 and 28 days after birth, so please make sure the time for getting the polio vaccination does not overlap the periods of these other inoculations. The vaccination cannot be given to children younger than 3-months or older than 90-months old, so please be aware of the following schedule.
