Disaster Information
What to do with the volcanic ash (updated February, 2011)

Wondering what to do with all that volcanic ash that just landed in your yard/on your car/on your
house?  Cleanup is quite simple.  You can put the ash in any plastic bag as long as you separate the
ash from all other materials (don't mix it in with your other garbage) and make sure the bag is thick
enough that it does not rip when you carry it (please consider at least double-bagging).  Take the bags
of ash to wherever you bring your non-burnable garbage, and make sure it is piled separately from the
rest of the garbage.  If the bags you are using for your ash are not clear, please consider writing 灰 on
the bag to help garbage collectors identify which bags contain ash.  Also, please do not wash your ashes
into the gutter.  This creates drainage problems and makes it harder to clean things up.

***UPDATE***  If you have a large amount of ash that you would like to dispose of directly, you
can take it to the designated disposal location in Takazaki called the
tsumakirishima kougyou danchi
keikaku youchi
.  You can find a map (in Japanese) here.  The map on the left is a close-up view, and
the map on the right is a more general map of the region.  The red star is located approximately where
you should go.  The location is open for dumping every day from 9AM to 4PM.  If you are transporting
the ash in bags, please open the bags and dump it out in the designated location.  If you are transporting
it in the back of a truck, please cover it with a tarp to make sure the ash does not disperse during
transport. Please follow the instructions of flaggers when you arrive at the drop-off location.  Also,
please be aware that drop-off locations may close suddenly in the event of rainy weather.  This is for your
own safety.  Please check the conditions before coming by listening to television and radio reports
(in Japanese).  Also, please understand that even after the rain has stopped, there may be times when
the roads to the drop-off location are still too sludgy to drive and may be closed for repairs.
If you live in the Takajo area, you may bring your ash here.  The Takajo location is open every day from
9AM to 5PM.
If you live in the Yamanokuchi area, you may bring your ash here.  The Yamanokuchi location is open 9AM
to 5PM on weekdays, and 9AM to 6PM on weekends and holidays.
